18th December 2020 - Press Release

Port of Dover is prepared and will remain the preferred route to Europe from 1st January

The Port of Dover is currently handling over 10,000 lorries a day, 20-25% up on last year's volumes during this period, in a clear sign that the market still chooses Dover when it really counts.

The Port is prepared and has worked hard with partner organisations in the UK and in France ready for January 1st and will continue to provide the most resilient route to and from Europe.  That will not change.

Doug Bannister, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, said: “We are as prepared as we can possibly be for the end of Transition. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure traffic flows smoothly through the port. There is no better placed operation to recover from any disruption that occurs. We sought funding from government via the Port Infrastructure Fund, to improve our position in both the medium and immediate periods, which was declined.

“However, it will not change the fundamental point that Dover will still be ready and will still be the most resilient route on January 1st because its geographic advantage will not change.”

Richard Burnett, Chief Executive, RHA, said: “Hauliers, the people we represent and the people who decide which route to take their goods, are continuing to choose Dover as it will remain the preferred route to Europe. We are clear Dover has done what it can to prepare, but it’s vital all those who use the port complete the form filling and prepare properly.”
