27th May 2016 - Press Release

Advice to drivers using the A20 and A2 in Dover this weekend

Drivers heading to Dover in Kent on Saturday and Sunday (28/29 May) are advised to plan their journeys as traffic on the A20 and A2 could be busier than normal.

Higher volumes of traffic are expected over the bank holiday weekend as drivers head to the Port of Dover and various events taking place across the area.

Freight heading to the Ferry Terminal in the Eastern Docks is advised to use the M20/A20 while tourist traffic should use the M2/A2. Passengers heading to the Cruise Terminal in the Western Docks are advised to use the M20/A20.

Local traffic is advised to consider other routes such as the B2011, A256 or A258, which may not be suitable for HGVs.

Drivers are reminded that one lane will be closed in both directions and a contraflow in place between the Limekiln and York Street roundabouts on the A20 as part of continuing junction improvement works.

It is expected that Dover TAP – the new road layout on the A20 to control the flow of freight along the A20 into the Port of Dover – will be used from early morning on Saturday to hold freight vehicles on the A20 approach to Dover due to the increased levels of traffic.

The A20 through Dover and A2 Jubilee Way could be closed for a period for safety reasons during demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Additional Highways England crews will be available to work with Kent Police to reopen the A2 or A20 as soon as it is safe to do so following any potential disruption.

Drivers are advised to plan their journeys and allow additional time if required.
