23rd September 2021 - Press Release

Dover Cargo welcomes its largest steel and first ever deep-sea vessel

Operations have successfully commenced on the MV Almar this week, the largest steel vessel to have ever called at the Port of Dover with dimensions of 197 metres long and 32.2 metres wide.

There is 7200 MT of steel plate and beams to discharge through the new cargo terminal, with ParkerSteel choosing the Port to process the cargo.

The latest call is another landmark moment for Port of Dover Cargo, with its customer base and facilities continuing to reach new heights since the terminal officially opened its doors for business in December 2019.

Karen Hayes, Commercial and Divisional Manager at Port of Dover Cargo Ltd said:

“It’s a fantastic day for us as we celebrate discharging the largest amount of steel to have ever been processed through the Port.

"Since our new cargo terminal opened just over 18 months ago, it has provided us with endless opportunities to continue to strengthen our facilities, customer base and team using the best technology and skills in the industry. We are now seeing such a diverse range of customers and cargo utilising our service - I’m really proud to see the hard work paying off on milestone days like today.”

Dylan Alexander, Managing Director of ParkerSteel Limited said:

“Today marks an extraordinary day for ParkerSteel - our biggest ever single discharge of steel, over 7000 tonnes, on the largest steel vessel accepted by the Port of Dover.

“Sourcing steel over the past 12 months has been truly challenging for the industry and having such a reliable partner as the Port of Dover plays a vital role in building a stronger Britain. This partnership will also allow us to expand our uninterrupted offering of high-quality products at any scale.

“We are delighted to be part of this historic moment and would like to thank The Port of Dover Cargo team for their enormous efforts in making this operation such a success”.
